SpiderOak vs iDrive: Feature Analysis

spideroak vs idrive

Storage Capacity

SpiderOak offers a range of storage plans to suit different user needs, with capacities ranging from 150GB to 5TB. The plan features remain consistent across all tiers; however, the only difference is in the total storage capacity.

Similarly, iDrive offers various storage plans depending on the user’s needs. They provide personal plans with storage capacities ranging from 5TB to 50 TB. For business plans, storage starts at 250GB and goes up to 1.25TB.

Compliance Standards

SpiderOak adheres to multiple regulations and standards to ensure the security and privacy of its users’ data. The applications CrossClave, SpiderOak One, CrossClave Groups, and Semaphor are HIPAA-compliant as a Business Associate, which is crucial for handling medical data. SpiderOak’s data centers are SAS 70 Type II compliant and are considered Tier 3 data centers by the Uptime Institute.

Meanwhile, iDrive has achieved SOC 2 Type 2 certification, a rigorous standard for managing customer data based on five “trust service principles.” iDrive also assists organizations in complying with several other regulations such as HIPAA, PCI, GDPR, FIPS, SOX, GLBA, SEC/FINRA, and PCI DSS.

Collaboration Tools

SpiderOak offers collaboration tools through its product, CrossClave. CrossClave provides secure multi-user file sharing, document syncing, and chat. It allows users to create a ShareRoom for accessing folders across devices via a unique URL and facilitates secure document collaboration and sync between multiple users with encryption.

iDrive allows users to share multiple files over email with friends or associates for collaborative access, and these files can be from various computers and mobile devices. They also have a feature called IDrive Docs, which allows users to view and edit office files, adding another layer to its collaborative capabilities.

Integration with Existing Systems

SpiderOak provides a solution using its own pre-configured storage infrastructure or accommodates an on-premise installation. Additionally, SpiderOak’s OrbitSecure integrates with in-orbit and ground systems already in use, reducing cost and complexity.

iDrive’s solution, IDrive e2, can be integrated with existing applications and data management tools. iDrive’s Online File Sync allows real-time file syncing across linked devices, including PCs, Macs, and mobile devices. They also offer ConnectWise Manage Integration for IDrive 360 Enterprise Endpoint backup, enhancing operations for MSPs.

Mobile Access and Apps Data Sovereignty

SpiderOak, as of now, does not provide mobile access. They previously had mobile applications for iOS and Android, but these have been discontinued. Regarding data sovereignty, SpiderOak is known for its strong security policies, which require stringent security measures to protect user data privacy and confidentiality.

iDrive Cloud does offer mobile access through their apps for iOS and Android. As for data sovereignty,  it’s important to note that iDrive has only one server location in the U.S. This could potentially limit your control over your data location, an aspect of data sovereignty.

Cost

The cost of SpiderOak varies depending on the plan you choose. They offer a range of plans with different storage capacities. The 150GB plan costs $6 per month, the 400GB plan is $11, and the 2TB plan is $14 monthly. The 5TB plan, their most extensive offering, costs $29 monthly or $320 a year. They also offer a 21-day free trial, which includes 250GB of cloud data backup.

On the other hand, for iDrive personal use, they offer a 5TB plan for $99.50 per year, a 10TB plan for $149.50 per year, a 20TB plan for $249.50 per year, and a 50TB plan for $499.50 per year. They also offer cloud storage billed at $6.95 for 2TB for the first year and tierless pricing starting at $0.004/GB per month. Other options include an Express Backup service for $59.95 per request and a Mini plan with 100GB of storage for $2.95 per year.
